About the exhibition:

This major exhibition showcases over 130 works by ten key Brazilian artists from the 20th century, highlighting the diversity of Brazilian art. Emerging in the early 20th century, Brazilian modernism blended contemporary trends with local influences, celebrating the country's cultures, identities, and landscapes. Artists explored themes like everyday life, Indigenous identity, and the Afro-Brazilian experience.

The exhibition introduces UK audiences to artists who have historically had less exposure, such as Anita Malfatti, who led the movement, and Tarsila do Amaral, a prominent female figure in Brazilian Modernism. It also features lesser-known figures like self-taught artists Alfredo Volpi and Djanira da Motta e Silva, Indigenous artist Rubem Valentim, and performance artist Flávio de Carvalho.

The majority of the works come from rare Brazilian private and public collections, many of which have never been shown in the UK.
